Marmalade Hoverfly Life Cycle

Adults are on the wing right through the year, although in largest numbers in the summer. As well as being a common resident fly, in some years, huge numbers migrate here from the continent when they can be seen busily feeding on flowers near the coast. Females look for colonies of aphids (small bugs which suck sap from plants such as green fly or black fly) near which to lay their eggs.
